Born in 1937 in Canton, MS, the only child of a physician and teacher, converted at 9 to Catholicism through the inspiration of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration who were teachers at her school. Called at 15 to join this order, taking the name Sr. Mary Thea (meaning “God”) after the Blessed Mother and her father, Theon. She became a teacher of all grade levels, eventually receiving her PhD and a college professor of English.
