Born in 1696 to Italian nobility, a child prodigy receiving his doctorate in law at 16. Entered the priesthood, ordained at 29 and a bishop at 66. Founder of the Redemptorists order in 1732 as an association of priests and brothers living a common life, dedicated to the imitation of Christ, parish missions and hearing confessions. Fought for the liberation of moral theology from the rigidity of Jansenism, concentrating on pastoral reforms in the pulpit and confessional – replacing the pompous oratory with simplicity, and the rigorism of Jansenism with kindness.
