Born in Lima, Peru in 1579 to a Spanish father and Indian mother from Panama, he became a barber, learned medical work and at 15 joined the Dominicans; by Peru law, as an African/Indian descendant, he was limited to be a lay brother performing household tasks. Later assigned to the infirmary, his healing touch performed many miracles. Loving all people without discrimination, he served the poor and slaves from Africa.
