Born to a poor family in France in 1581, he was Franciscan educated and ordained in 1600. Captured as a slave, he escaped after 2 years to become a Count’s chaplain in charge of poor distributions. Began preaching missions to improve lay and priestly formation, established hospitals, and provided relief to jgreat, founded Daughters of Charity and Vincentian priestly orders, and lay Ladies of Charity to serve.
